Greetings from the Mayor of Kassel for
the "Flying Art" exhibition project
The Sultanate of Oman and the Federal Republic of Germany have a friendly political relationship of mutual respect. The two countries are now connected by a "bridge of art through the air".

I am delighted that the artists from Oman taking part in the “Flying Art” project are exhibiting their work in the d:gallery in our documenta-city of Kassel. It is my pleasure to be the patron of this event and I extend a warm welcome to the artists.

Kassel is a great city, a city to love and to live in. Throughout its more than 1,100-year history it has had considerable experience of integration. In recent years Kassel has enjoyed excellent economic development and has made a name for itself as a city of art and culture. There are few cities in Germany with such a wide variety of museums and Kassel has wonderful historic gardens with the Wilhelmshöhe Park and the Hercules Monument with the water features that were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site last year. The documenta, the world’s most important exhibition of modern art, shows how the city is open to the world and home to an incredible variety of creative expression. Kassel’s artists have space, peace and tolerance to develop their arts.
Kassel is therefore the ideal place for the exchange of experience with the artists from Oman. Where better on their journey around the world could they enter into international discussion of their works, gaining new ideas and impulses while at the same time communicating to us their traditions, their identity and their forms of artistic expression? I thank the artists of the Oman Art Association for their initiative and all the individual people and institutions for their support for this exhibition project. I wish the project great resonance and success.

And over all this Gaboos Ibn Said, the sovereign, rules with well-balanced policies. Twenty years ago the Art Association of Oman was founded in Maskat as part of this modernization of the traditional Oman society. Further associations followed, as in the port town of Salala.

The artists of Oman are hugely optimistic and inspired to contribute to a fascinating future! They are curious and always seeking to exchange ideas and take opportunities to show their talents. There is a remarkably large number of women active in fine arts. The exhibition in Kassel aims to support the aspirations of this nation to open up to the world, at the same time confronting us here with a world of art that, although just developing, is not to be found in any other Arabian state! And this exhibition is just the beginning! This process will continue and we support the project of founding an academy of art in Oman in order to give art its due place in Omani life.
The country is rich in nature, the Omani people are very hospitable and therefore we say:
“You are very welcome here in Kassel!”

The Sultanate of Oman is quite a young country, only 43 years old. Opening up to the world is therefore the way forward to further stimulate the wave of modernization which has taken place in the last few years. I am sure that this will be crowned with success as Oman is politically very stable and profits from its oil fields and its continuing economic growth. The Sultanate has also become a popular tourist magnet, especially amongst the Germans.

The Omani Flying Art Exhibition

The basic idea of the “Flying Art Exhibition” is to give Omani artists the opportunity to enter into international dialogue with their work. The purpose of the “journey around the world” is to enable an exchange to take place about Omani traditions, identity and artistic inspiration, while also attempting to reflect on the identity of one’s own society and allowing it to be enriched with new influences.
43 works will be presented of artists who are members of the Oman Art Association in Maskat. The transport of the art works by the state airline Oman Air will already be part of the overall exhibition. During the flights to the countries of destination, the airline shows all the art works on the cabin screens. Thus is created a kind of “bridge through the air” with art, waking feelings of pleasant anticipation of the exhibition in the country to be visited.

The first phase: Individual exhibitions

The artists were sent out into the world as part of an exchange programme, so that they could develop further and come back to Oman with new ideas. The representatives of Oman in the various countries undertook the organization of these exhibitions. Up to now, these have taken place in the following countries:

London-Great Britain
Paris-France
Munich-Germany
Milan-Italy
Zurich-Switzerland

The second phase: Group exhibitions

Up to now Kassel is the first place to host a group exhibition. Further events will take place in 2014 and the project will be concluded in Oman on 19th December 2014.

The exhibition in the documenta town of Kassel will be opened on 15th May 2014 at 7 pm in the d:gallery.

This exhibition is also a sign that the good will and good feelings between Germany and Oman are growing steadily, it confirms the excellent relations between our countries that have been so good for the last three decades.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to Mr. Hilgen, the Lord Mayor of the documenta city of Kassel. Our heartfelt thanks are also due to the organisers of the exhibition, in particular the directors of the vereintekunst e.V. those responsible in the d:gallery and the curator Zaki Al-Maboren for organising and coordinating this project.
We are proud to be guests in this beautiful city and wish everyone every success.

Colours in the Sky - Art in the Heavens

The Flying Art Exhibition “Colours in the Heavens” started out in the Sultanate of Oman, a country of culture and tradition, to land in the documenta city of Kassel in Germany on the first stage of its journey.
The content of the art works, however, reflects the deeper senses and the cultural history of the country, shaped and drawn by the “skills” and the “knowledge” of the artists of Oman. Here mutual cultural values are exchanged and understanding between peoples promoted.
